Acting wasn't always the path Jay was set on. Jay Walker grew up in Eagan, Minnesota, where his father ran a business buying and selling airplane parts that Jay was being groomed to take over one day. He earned his work ethic by working in the warehouse every summer and eventually went on to graduate college with an applied economics degree. However, during his last years of school he realized that he was miserable and that the life he was shaping for himself he did not have a passion for. This led him to ask himself "What had last brought me real joy?" and the answer was performance. In high school he had joined one of the best speech and debate teams in the country and he competed on the speech side every weekend. Here is where he learned comedic timing and the live trade of energy between a performer and an audience. He won state and placed second at nationals so he knew that he had something when it came to performance. This memory drove him to start doing stand-up and he enrolled in an on-camera acting class to rediscover his love of performance. He continued to make an impression on others and fortunately his teacher sent along a tape of Jay's second stand-up set ever to a manager he knew in Los Angeles. This caught the manager's attention and he asked him to fly out for a meeting. One thing led to another, and it all began to feel possible. Jay had made up his mind that he would never forgive himself if he did not give acting a real, serious shot.
Most of our job as actors is being told no, and if you take all those nos to heart, you're just not going to survive.

Jay decided to make the bold move to Los Angeles in 2012 and he hit a misleading lucky streak early on. The first commercial audition he ever had, he booked and by the end of that year he had shot three national commercials. He was convinced that work would always come this easily, but he was quickly humbled by a stretch of a year or two with no bookings. This is when Jay began taking more classes and learned to treat classes as the tool that kept him sharp through the downturns. The classes did paid off and the bigger jobs did come. He booked a recurring guest star on a Starz series "Run the World", but what he never saw coming was video games. Despite being a lifelong gamer, Jay had only ever pictured performing in front of a camera, not inside a volume. This changed when he was cast as Seb in Minds Eye where he was introduced to PCAP. He was hooked when he got to perform long, uncut scenes where every angle could be a close-up and where the world has to be conjured entirely from imagination. It quickly became his favorite kind of work and shortly after he was also cast as the lead character Murphy in Battlefield 6.
It's kind of like a shared dream with your castmates. Everybody has to believe it to create that reality, which reads in the final product.

Nowadays, Jay is living a version of his life he once couldn't have fathomed. He has been a gamer since before he could talk and he now plays titles where his own voice pilots the character on screen. A strangeness he is still wrapping his head around and is endlessly grateful for. He loves TV and Film and will always continue to seek out opportunities to perform in those mediums, but he aims to keep working in PCAP, to disappear into a long, story-driven worlds. Also he hopes that his future in games allows him to one day strap on arm extensions and finally play a monster or to step into a fantasy role and experience that world. The Minnesota kid who spent his summers in a warehouse managing airplane parts still cannot quite believe this is the job he has now. And if you're ever in the volume with him and see him grinning, just know that inner child is alive and well, jumping for joy every single day.
My energy when I walk onto this set makes a difference. If anybody is going to be taking cues from me, I want them to feel like they're in a creatively safe space, as if they're being empowered to do their very best work.
1. "Has acting always been something you wanted to do, or how did this kind of start and manifest?"
2. "Are there any disciplines from doing speech that you still carry over that help you in acting today, or is acting for video games and film a whole different ballpark?"
3. "What was the motivation that took you from being pretty good at speech and debate in Minnesota to wanting to take this to another level?"
4. "Did you run into people asking if you were sure, and did you have to face getting critiques with your own family as well pursuing acting?"
5. "Is there anything else that keeps you motivated and mentally strong in those down times, and why did you not just go back to Minnesota when times were hard?"
6. "Did you anticipate video game acting to be a part of that equation at all, and what was PCAP like when you were introduced to it, especially since you've done TV and film?"
7. "What differences have you recognized, both weaknesses and strengths, of PCAP versus TV and film?"
8. "How do you stay connected to the humanity when stories and settings are so high stakes in games?"
9. "What is the moment like in the morning before you shoot, and what does that preparation look like for you?"
10. "When you play a leading role versus a supporting role, does that change your preparation at all, and does it change how you work with your cast mates?"
11. "What was that process like for you to get to Murph, and do you frame your auditioning any differently for film and TV versus performance capture?"
12. "What does present day J want to say to that kid playing Super Mario on his Nintendo back in Minnesota?"
13. "Do you feel like playing video games has helped you perform in performance capture, and if so, how?"
